Make Your Home Pet Friendly with the Right Window Treatments and More
This time on the Budget Blinds Scottsdale blog we’re going to do something a little bit different! Normally we spend a lot of time talking about the power of different window coverings, the pros and cons to using certain materials and the like. But this time we want to look a bit broader to the things you can do to your home to make it as pet friendly as possible! And yes, there is something with your window treatments you can do!
Over 67% of American households have a pet, of those almost 75% own at least one dog, according to the American Pet Products Association. Keeping our furry family safe is a priority but it might be a bit of an afterthought when it comes to home design.
Here are four things you can do to foster a purr-fectly safe space for the pets in your life!
4 Ways to Make Your Home Pet-Friendly
Choose the Right Flooring
Think about this, our furry friends all have four legs. That’s double the amount we do, and means so much of their physical interaction with the home is on the floor. Make sure your home’s flooring is conducive to a great time and life for you pooch! For your convenience this means a floor that is water-restitant, scratch-resistant, and easy to clean - comfortable for both you andyour pet to stand on. If your following isn’t that - say your home is concrete or large tiles consider getting a great rug!
Rugs can add some great design elements to a space but they also add a layer of softness as well which your furry friends will appreciate! Get a rug that can stand up to the rigorous wear and tear of an active pet so consider materials like acrylic, polyester, olefin and polypropylene for a low-maintenance, pet-friendly rug. Indoor/Outdoor rugs are also a good choice because they can be hosed off for easy cleaning.
If you want to be crafty about providing a rug and saving you some cleaning trouble choose a rug in the same color as your dog’s hair to help the rug “hide” dog hair in between vacuuming. Now everyone’s happy!
Choose A Cordless Pet-Safe Window Covering Solution
That’s right we had to get something window related in here! Window coverings do a lot of good for your indoor spaces but if you’re not careful that can also potentially cause some harm!
If your windows are near the floor, your blinds or window treatments will be in your pet’s view and also where they can get access too. Cords are dangerous for your pets, no two ways about it. There’s the potential that they could chew on them thinking they’re toys or otherwise get wrapped up in them.
Avoid anything with cords and instead look at cordless options like shutters, or automate/motorize your blinds so they don’t have cords. Either way you’ll be keeping your pet family safe!
Give Your Pet a Comfy Bed For Good Sleep!
A well rested dog is a happy dog and since dogs sleep on average about 12-14 hours a day they’ll be doing a lot of snoozing. Making sure they have someplace cozy to do all that snoozing is of utmost importance! A soft and supportive dog bed will help protect their joints as well as help improve their overall health (with high quality sleep!)
PRO TIP: Make sure you buy a dog bed with a washable cover! Accidents happen and either way you’ll want to keep it washed and rotated regularly to keep everyone clean and happy!
Store Food Properly
The last thing anyone wants when they go to eat dinner is to see a bowl full of bugs staring back at them! Save your pet from this creepy-crawly fate by making sure their food is stored properly. Proper storage will also keep the food fresh and delicious rather than dried out or moldy. And store your food properly as well! There’s a lot of foods that we enjoy as treats that our pets would love to take a bite out of if they could but the food can be poisonous!
