Lutron is a company we are so proud to offer. Their products are second to none and they have been in business for decades making dimmer switches and other, smarter solutions for lighting. They have been working in the automated blinds and shades industry since the 1990s starting with their larger commercial lines. In the past 10 years they took what they learned, integrated the longest lasting battery technology in the industry and targeted the average home consumer with their Serena line. Lutron Serena Shades are one of our favorites. Here’s what they are and how they work.
Serena Shades are smart, automated shades that can be controlled through remotes, mobile apps, Apple HomeKit, and now with Google Assistant. Although they can be wired with low voltage wiring, they are typically battery powered, meaning no wires, no invasive installation, and incredibly low maintenance(here’s a document on changing the batteries, it’s just half a page!). Lutron’s advanced technology gives their shades a typical 3-5 year battery life. Using the Lutron app, you can control every smart device in your home to ensure optimal operation, just the way you like it!
The shades are installed in your window, with the headrail holding all the necessary circuitry and battery components. After the quick installation, all you need is to use your control or the Lutron App on your phone to make it work the way you want it!
App Potential
Without the app, Serena shades are just about half the product! With the app you can control multiple shades and lights together, creating moods at a finger touch. Wake up and grind your coffee to soft light by scheduling times for shades and lights to automatically adjust. Forget to turn off your lights and close your blinds every day you leave for work? Set up geofencing and ensure you never forget again!

Most Common Questions about Lutron Serena Shades
Are the shades loud?
A reasonable concern, after all smart doesn’t necessarily mean silent (just ask Alexa!) The sound levels on Serena shades are less than 44 decibels at the loudest (for honeycomb shades) and less for roller shades. That’s quieter than most refrigerators!
Do multiple shades move at the same speed?
Sure do! The Lutron control circuitry inside the shades ensures that they all move at the same speed, regardless of battery life. Set your shades to roll down at a certain time and enjoy synchronous shading!
Can I manually close the shades?
You can, but you certainly wouldn’t want to! By manually manipulating the shades you can cause damage to their motors so avoid that whenever possible. While Lutron shades are far less likely to be damaged by manual movement than other brands, it is still not a good idea.
