How to Choose Window Coverings

If you are anything like most of our customers, you are here trying to do some window shopping. You know you need to get something to cover those great big windows in the living room but you’re not sure what to look for. Do you go with automated vertical blinds? What about woven wood shades? Blackout roller shades and really complete the theater look?  Regardless of where you are at in the process, here’s a handing guide on how to choose window coverings for your home!

What’s Your Objective?

The biggest piece of the puzzle for choosing your window coverings is to identify what your objective is! Now you are probably thinking, “the objective is to cover the window, what are you talking about?” That’s true, all window coverings are designed to cover the  window, but the reason you want to cover the window is what we are talking about. What goal do you have in covering the window, do you want to better control the light? Are you looking for heat control, for more privacy, more decoration or functionality (or both!)

Window Coverings for Light Control

Of course all coverings offer some measure of light control. All coverings are a barrier between the sun and the room will block out or diffuse some amount of light but depending on material the difference could be huge! If your main goal is to control the amount of light completely, the answer you’re looking for is blackout blinds.

Window Coverings for Heat Control

An astonishing almost 30% of a homes heat loss is through the windows! To keep your home from losing the comfortable temps or, as the more likely case in Scottsdale, to keep it from heating up too much, you want to look at cellular shades. These shades are constructed in such a way that they have cells between the layers that create air pockets and act as insulators giving them the highest R-value (the capacity to resist heat flow) out there.

Window Coverings for Privacy

Much like when it comes to lighting control, all window coverings offer some privacy. But if you want to really get your privacy you want to look at one of the these five:

  • Blackout blinds (again, they block out all light, they’ll stop anyone from looking in!)

  • Venetian blinds

  • Roman blinds

  • Vertical blinds

  • Plantation shutters

Window Coverings for Decoration

If your only care is decoration, that’s easy enough! Take a look at our product pages and browse for what style you think will match best with your home. Plenty of styles of coverings work well with any aesthetic, and if you are looking for something more particular well, we have a lot of options. Chances are whatever covering you decide on will have a number of other benefits past looking nice!
