Four Tips for Finishing Your Custom Home

If you’ve built a custom home or are in the process of designing or building one, then this blog is for you. Firstly, congratulations on building your dream home! It has to be such an exciting time for you! Secondly, we’re impressed! Building a home takes a lot of time, planning, and effort — it’s not an easy task! That’s why today, we at Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix wanted to help you out with a few tips on how to finish your custom home, including inside and outside window coverings.

Tip #1: Remember It’s YOUR Home

We’ve all browsed lifestyle magazines, made Pinterest boards, saved a ton of inspiration photos from various albums, but remember that it’s your home. You don’t have to follow these designs to a T, which a lot of homeowners get caught up in. Make it how YOU want it, not how it’s printed in a magazine (unless, of course, that’s what you want). You have the power to decide everything, right down to the color of your curtain hardware.

At the end of the day, the finishes you select should reflect your personal style as well as compliment how you actually want to live in your home. After all, you might love the look of a jacuzzi tub, but if you don’t really enjoy long soaks, then it’s probably best to leave it out of the design.

Use the resources at your disposal, including recommendations from your builder, to decide which finishes to include in your new home or remodeling project. But remember—it’s your home!

Tip #2: Focus Only On What Matters Most To You

Building a home is exhausting. You feel like you have to decide on every little feature. In reality, you don’t. If you don’t care about something in your home, then leave it up to your architect or interior designer. They’ll pick something that matches the home, fits your style, and won’t break your budget (and will run it by you first for approval, of course!). So don’t get caught up in all the details you don’t care about. It’s not worth it!

Our recommendation is to put your time and brain power into what you care about and what you enjoy. If you don’t care about the bathroom sink, but really want a say in what type of counter or vanity it’s installed in, then focus on that. While exhausting, building your dream home should be fun too. Don’t lose sight of the  fun by focusing on things you don’t care about. Instead, let the experts do that for you.

Tip #3: Choose the Right Indoor and Outdoor Window Coverings

With the hundreds of choices you’ve had to make with building your home, you’re undoubtedly overwhelmed, but don’t skip the treatments. Here in Arizona, nothing is more important than keeping your house cool and your furniture, walls, and floors safe from sun damage.

This part can be really fun too. It’s about matching your styles and favorite colors, highlighting your windows and deciding what area of the room will POP. If you have a large window, make that your focus with drapes and Roman shades cascading elegantly down it, or put the focus on the wood shutters in your dining room so your guests know you’re classy, but entertaining.

Consider the below when selecting your window treatment style:

  • Styles and colors of your furniture
  • Types and colors of flooring — wood, tile, carpet
  • Wallcoverings and colors — paint, wallpaper
  • Other fixtures in the room — lighting, ceiling fans

If you’re worried about matching your colors, we’ve got you covered too. Our design experts are ready to help you with a free consultation. Give us a call at Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix and we’ll find the perfect window treatments for every room in your new house.

Outdoor Window Coverings

Don’t forget about your yard! Outdoor window coverings are crucial to help stave off the heat in the summer and keep the wind from chilling you in the winter. If you have a covered patio, deck, pergola, or outdoor living space, exterior shutter  will be the perfect outdoor window covering for you.

Exterior shutters are more durable than traditional wood shutters so they’ll withstand everything Arizona has to throw at them. They also provide great views when open and complete privacy when closed. Plus, they’ll be a statement that sets your yard apart from everyone else’s in the neighborhood. We guarantee it.

Tip #4: Track and Maintain Your Budget

Beyond everything else, make sure you’re on track with your budget. There are areas where you should spend more (like on a reputable contractor and home builder), and areas you can save money (like with some demolition, painting, and DIY updates to your current furniture). Make sure you identify what those areas are for you and stick to that.

We can help too. We have styles and alternative options to fit every budget so you and your wallet will be happy. On top of all that, we offer a free design consultation to help you find what you’re looking for. Give us a call today so we can help add the final touches to your dream home.
