Everything You Want To Know About Board and Batten Shutters
In the interest of having the most educated buyers possible, whether it’s during a consultation with Ken or here on our blog we strive to put out all the information you need to know when it comes to window coverings, even if they’re a type we don’t necessarily install and work with. It’s important to know and see what’s out there so you can make the most informed decision possible! This time around we are looking at one type of outdoor shutter - board and batten shutters. What they are, when to use them, all that good stuff!
Everything to Know About Board and Batten Shutters
What They Are
Board and batten shutters are just that, shutters made from boards that are designed to batten down to cover and protect your windows from outside. They are some of the oldest kinds of shutters there are, if you picture exterior shutters right now, you are probably picturing this kind of covering, they are that common.
They are made of a few boards placed together and set on hinges that are installed on the outside of a window frame. Some styles of board and batten have only one large shutter that covers the entire window, others are split with half of the covering on each side, the two pieces latching together in the middle.
What They Are Made Of
Being shutters on the outside of the home, and designed to protect from the elements, board and batten shutters absolutely have to be weather resistant. They also have to be straight grained (meaning the fibers all run in parallel for us non wood-working folks!) to ensure that they do not warp, shrink, or swell with the environmental changes. Cedar is a common wood used in making them, but far from the only option!
When To Use Board and Batten Shutters
A classic option to bring a truly pastoral feel to your home, board and batten shutters reflect that farmhouse style. If your home is on a plot of land with some horses or cattle, you can be certain board and batten shutters will fit your farm home or cottage aesthetic. For those in our area (Tempe & Central Phoenix) putting on some shutters like this might not be necessary to fit your style but dang if they don’t look great on many types of homes.
The other wonderful benefit of solid shutters like these is blocking out all that heat! Ok, we may hit on that a lot here at Budget Blinds of Tempe & Central Phoenix but c’mon, with weather like ours it is probably the number one reason we need quality window covering treatments!
