Best Water Resistant Window Treatments For Bathrooms
Some rooms need extra care when it comes to window treatments. The bathroom and above sinks, for instance, are going to experience more humidity and moisture than your living room. So when choosing blinds, shades, or shutters, you’re going to want to choose water resistant window treatments.
Windows over tubs and sinks are subjected to much more humidity, steam and splashing than other windows in the home. Diligently running your bathroom fan might not be enough to protect window treatments from humidity and condensation. So it's extra important to choose a window covering that is non-absorbent and will stay strong in a splash zone.
At Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix, our design experts know exactly what will work best in your bathroom or above the kitchen sink. Give us a call or read on to learn more!
Faux Wood Blinds And Faux Wood Shutters
Faux wood is perfect for areas with high humidity and splash zones. It comes with all of the perks of real wood, but without the fear of warping.
Faux wood blinds and faux wood shutters are kitchen and bathroom classics because they are moisture-resistant. Many faux wood blinds come in convincing wood-tones with embossed textures, so it can sometimes be tough to tell faux wood from real wood. Even if you have real wood throughout your home, you won’t be able to tell the difference. And you won’t have to compromise nor lose the luxurious feel wood brings to any home.
Most just need regular dusting, but in damper rooms, you may need to tend to them more often to prevent mold and mildew growth. All you need is a mild cleaner, soap, or wood polish and a soft rag. Do not use abrasive cleaners which may damage the finish or paint. Dry each slat with a clean cloth. It’s that simple.
If you have routless blinds slats — blinds without holes in the middle — you can remove them one by one for easier cleaning too! Slide them back in when you’re done and re-align notches with the cords.
Do not submerge blinds or get headrail and internal components wet, as they can rust and deteriorate.
Roller And Solar Shades Are Moisture Resistant
If faux wood blinds don't suit your aesthetic, a roller shade might be perfect for you. Many roller shades are made from vinyl or PVC, so they don't hold on to moisture like other fabric shades. This means there is less risk for mold, mildew, and unsightly stains.
Nowadays, roller shades are printed in a wide variety of stylish colors, textures, and patterns. At Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix, we’ll make sure you have the right look, paired with the right material.
Privacy won’t be a concern either. When it comes to mounting, shade can be mounted on the inside or outside of the window frame. Interior mounts can leave gaps between the shade and the window, so they’re best for windows in the kitchen or laundry room. Exterior are best for privacy!
You'll also want to think about privacy with the fabric itself. While light filtering roller shades are not transparent, if you have a light on in the room at night, shadows or silhouettes may be visible from outside. If that is a concern for you, we recommend sticking with a blackout fabric. At Budget Blinds, you can choose from various levels of transparency to let light in, but not let anyone see your silhouette from behind the shades.
Window Treatments to Avoid
Because everything we do is customized to fit your needs, you should know things to avoid as well.
We mentioned it briefly, but real wood should not be in the bathroom, above a sink, or in a room with a lot of moisture. Wood absorbs moisture, which leads to warping, cracking, mold, mildew, and bacteria growth. Once a piece of wood warps, it cannot be reshaped. So think twice about putting wood in a room with a lot of moisture! This applies to bamboo and woven wood as well.
Heavy fabrics and drapes should be avoided as well. As you can imagine, fabrics, such as polyester, silk, and cotton retain moisture. Have you ever tried to air dry a sweater? It takes a long time! Curtains are the same way.
On top of that, they retain smells and bacteria as well. Not all curtains are easier to clean too, so it may not be as easy as throwing them into a washing machine and dryer (we don’t recommend doing this anyway). It’s best you avoid anything fabric and still to faux wood and metal for the bathroom and above sinks.
