This Rug Really Ties the Whole Room Together

Here at Budget Blinds of Scottsdale and Fountain Hills, we are all about elevating and evolving our customers’ homes. While that is most often done through our incredible window-covering solutions, it’s not the only way. This time on the blog, we wanted to highlight a different offering of ours: The Rug. Here is how the right rug can really tie the room together, how to place it, and more.

What Makes a Rug

Rugs are portable floor coverings finished in standard sizes and don't cover every single inch of space. If you want to cover every square inch of your floor in something soft, you’re looking for a carpet!

Choosing the Right Size Rug

When it comes to finding the right size rug, you want to look for the biggest one that can fit the space. An area rug shouldn’t be more than a foot away from the baseboards. The larger the rug, the more inviting it makes the room feel. That’s just a good general rule, however, and sometimes, with the right styling, you can get away with other layouts. After all, rules are meant to be broken!

If a room isn’t rectangular shaped, you may want to opt for a round rug that can sit in the middle of the room instead. Again, the bigger (within reason), the better.

How to Place a Rug in a Living Room

Living rooms are the classic spot for a rug! For these, you may want to place the rug slightly differently than suggested. You want a good rug that creates boundaries for the living space you’re using. A rug that’s too small and overshadowed by furniture like an end table or a coffee table that's too big isn’t quite the look you’re after. Instead, get a rug that is large enough for all of the furniture to sit on, or at the very least, the front legs of the sofa, chairs, or whatever you have. This rug acts as a central space that the rest of the living room furniture is drawn to and around.

If your living room is used for a few different spaces, like, say, a TV space and a book nook, you can (and should) use different rugs to define the spaces. Again, using the same rules of thumb as outlined before. Get a rug that either fits everything on it or at least the front legs of any furniture with a bit extra on the sides, about 12-15”.

How to Place a Rug in a Dining Room

Rugs and dining tables go hand in hand. In the dining room, you want to center the rug under the table, making sure that it's large enough to fit all of the chairs, especially when folks are sitting around it. You want to ensure that no one has to readjust or think twice as they’re moving their chair, so pick a rug that is at least a foot wider than the dining table.

How to Place a Rug in a Bedroom

When it comes down to it, everything in your bedroom is in service of your bed. So, choosing a rug and how to place it will all depend on the size of your bed. If you want a one-rug look for the room, you want something that can fit about ½ to ¾ of the bed on the rug, with 18” of room at the foot and along the sides (assume your bed’s headboard is against the wall.)

You want to place the rug under the bed, but not fully. Placing the rug perpendicular to the rug will maximize the amount of usable rug, giving you a soft step in and out of bed.

Thankfully, beds are in standard sizes, making it easy to shop for a rug of the right size. If you have a full, a 5’x 8’ rug should cover it; a queen would need an 8’ x 10’, a king would be 9’ x 10’, and so on. If your bedroom is smaller, then you can always take the route of getting a rug and placing it in the center of the room, again following that 12” clearance rule of thumb mentioned earlier. This can then tie the room together around the rug.

These are just some basic thoughts when it comes to choosing and placing a rug in your room. Remember the rules of thumb (no more than a foot away from the walls, center it amidst the other furniture as needed), and you’ll have success – judiciously choose to break it, and you will be adding your own unique flair.
