Dress Up Your Windows for The Holidays

Who says seasonal decor is only for walls, Christmas trees, and table tops? Celebrating the holiday season with curtains and drapes that complement your year-round-decor can be fun, too. Read on for some holiday design inspired ideas for dressing up your window treatments.

Curtains That Match Your Holiday Aesthetic

What is your holiday aesthetic this year? Common trends we’re seeing for the upcoming holiday season include ultra minimalistic/modern like neutrals and earth tones.  For traditional holiday color palettes, metallic red, blue, silver, and gold are still on trend. And as always, a “home for the holidays” feel with green pine and contemporary decor is always welcomed.

The trick to effectively dressing your windows up for the holidays is to choose drapes and curtains that support what you already have going on— not steal the show.

So if your Christmas tree decorations are following a colored theme throughout, match your drapes and curtains with those colors to create fluidity in the home. The same method can be applied to your wrapping paper.

Minimalistic for the Holidays

Minimalism has taken the interior design world by storm, and people love the clean lines that act as the focal point of the aesthetic. But how does holiday decor mix with minimalism, when the essence of minimalism is, “less is more”?

With color play— that’s how.

Minimalism relies on a consistent color palette of mostly neutrals with dark, earthy elements as well. Shades of heather grays and even darker tones of browns and blacks are used to support the pop of brighter beiges. This same concept can be applied when selecting curtains and drapes to dress your windows for the holidays.

A popular look for a minimalistic Christmas aesthetic includes nearly-bare Christmas trees. If you’d like to decorate a minimalistic tree, wrap a single light strand around the tree. Christmas lights come in various shades of hue, including anything from ‘warm’ to bright yellow. Choose your glow based on the vibe you’re going for in your home.

If you’re trying to create an ambient and relaxing hue, go for more warm light textures.

Follow a neutral color palette when it comes to choosing decorative drapes or curtains. Does your home already have window treatments, like roller shades? If you are layering holiday curtains over already installed, year-round window treatments, take the color of those window treatments into consideration as well.

We love drapes and curtains with a heavier, cream colored fabric to support a minimalistic design. Consider beiges with a barely-there faded pattern on them in silver, black, or dark blue. Minimalism is about simplicity — so if you are choosing a curtain with a design or pattern on it, make sure the pattern isn’t overwhelming.

You can also match your curtains and drapes to the color of your wrapping paper. For instance, if you’re using a cardboard-bown minimalistic wrapping paper, a brown or light neutral colored drape would be a fantastic companion. Getting something with a relaxed pattern on the drape or curtain is what will bring the holiday energy you’re trying to incorporate into the space.

Traditional Christmas Colors and Patterns

Bring on the plaid, dark greens, bright reds, and big ornaments! Nothing says Christmas like the traditional colors that serve as an anthem for the holiday season.

Dressing up your window treatments with holiday-inspired drapes and curtains is easy to do when you’re decorating in a classic Christmas aesthetic. Timeless Christmas decor always allows for some pattern play. If you intend on packing your Christmas tree with loud ornaments, tinsel for days, and lights that brighten up the whole room — the possibilities for curtain and drape pairings are endless.

Just as we advised earlier in the blog, you will want to consider the colors of the window treatments you already have if you are intending to layer with holiday curtains. If you are simply replacing your every-day-curtains with your holiday drapery, even better! You can pack up the regular drapes and put them away for a couple months.

Consider the color of the paint on your walls, your Christmas tree theme if you have one, and the wrapping paper you’ll be using most this season. All of these aspects should heavily influence your choice of holiday drapes. For instance, if your Christmas tree theme is red with accents of silver, consider silver as your color for the drapes.

When going with a traditional Christmas color palette, it’s important to be intentional and strategic with your drapes. Busy drapes will completely overwhelm the room. If you do decide to choose a pattern make sure the main color of the drape or curtain you choose compliments another color in the room.
