What are Top Down Bottom Up Shades?
Ever hear the phrase, “top down bottom up shades?” It’s a common industry term that usually turns a few heads whenever we mention it. It’s really simple. The “top down” and “bottom up” refers to the movement of the window shade. In other words, top down bottom up shades can be raised from the bottom (bottom up) and lowered from the top (top down) so you can stack your window covering in any position. In other words, they can raise and lower from both the top and bottom.
They’re ideal if you want full light and an unobstructed view, while maintaining privacy. The goal with a top down, bottom up shade is to meet all your privacy needs while still giving you access to natural light. Plus, they come with a clean, seamless look that matches any style.
What Are the Benefits of Top Down, Bottom Up Shades?
Outside of how they operate, what exactly are top-down bottom-up shades? They are shades that offer a lot of flexibility so you can customize exactly what position your shades rest in. For example, if you have these shades in your bathroom, then you can choose to lower your shades from the top of the window. This will let in natural light, but won’t let anyone see you!
Another example would be for the bedroom or living room. Say you’re resting in bed or on the couch and want to enjoy the sun, but you don’t want light in your eyes. You can lower the shades from the bottom so the light stays on the ground!
Or what if you want to enjoy your favorite streaming service, but the glare from your window is too much? You can either close your shades entirely, or just raise your shades from the bottom to allow in some of that golden light without disrupting your evening activities.
Additionally, these shades offer excellent protection from UV rays, as you can block them no matter where the sun is! All of that without sacrificing natural light.
How Do Top Down Bottom Up Shades Work?
Most top down bottom up shades work through a simple cord mechanism and two top rails.
The first rail is called the mounting rail. The mounting rail is attached to either the inside of your window or the outside of your window, depending on your preference and the look/style of your home.
The second rail is called the floating rail. The floating rail clicks into the mounting rail. When you’re ready to lower or lift your blinds, this floating rail can be disengaged by pulling on the cord.
Can Top Down Bottom Up Shades Be Cordless?
Yes and no. All top-down bottom-up shades need internal cords, but not all of them need cords to operate them. They can be cordless — the bottom floating-mount will simply have a “tab” you use to lock the shade into place.
Are They Safe for Kids to Operate!
Yes! Top-down bottom-up shades are perfectly safe for kids to operate, though we always recommend teaching them how to operate them. They don’t require a lot of force, so make sure they’re gentle with them.
Additionally, if you choose the cordless option, make sure your hands and your kids’ hands are clean before operating them, as the mounts are susceptible to fingerprints.
Can They Work with a Smart Home?
Yes! Top bottom-up shades can easily be integrated with your smart home system. Even if you don’t currently use smart home features, we always recommend choosing an option that can sync with a smart home system in case your needs change in the future.
Depending on the maker, not all shades will work with smart home motors, so just be sure to check with your consultant!
