Spring Cleaning: How to Properly Clean Your Shades

It’s that time of year again— spring cleaning! As a homeowner, you know just how time-consuming it can be to keep your house clean. From dusting to vacuuming to scrubbing the bathroom, there is always something to be cleaned— and, often after you have cleaned your home, a couple days later it looks like all your hard work has been undone.

Sure, you clean your windows regularly, but what about the shades that cover them? Cleaning your window treatments is often the last thing on your mind when cleaning your home and seems like a daunting task. However, with a few simple tips and tricks, you can easily clean your shades, leaving your home feeling brighter and cleaner than ever.

Leave no window covering behind this spring! Whether they are woven wood, solar, cellular, roman, sheer or roller shades, they are great at keeping a room cool, blocking out light and providing privacy— but they are also great at collecting dust, pet hair, and other dirt. Don’t worry, Budget Blinds has you covered! All you need are some simple tools and a few minutes to improve your view. Learn how to clean your window shades quickly and easily with these cleaning methods.

Woven Wood Shades

Woven wood shades are an easy way to add layered eclectic style to your space with natural materials woven together creating a rich delicate texture. You should treat these shades with extra care when cleaning them. For bamboo and wood shades, gently clean the surface with a duster. For woven wood shades with finer grass materials that are highly textured and easy to snag, use the brush attachment on the vacuum. The soft brush attachment will gently lift dust away. Just be sure to support the fabric from behind as you vacuum so that it doesn’t get sucked into the hose. If your shades need extra attention to remove residue, use a damp microfiber cloth. Note, if too much water is applied on the surface the wood can warp. Simply take a damp sponge or cloth and ring it out so that water isn’t dripping. Press lightly and dab at the dirty spots along the shade.

Solar Shades

Because solar shades are designed to let in light and provide a clear view of the outside, many homeowners install them on windows that are frequently opened. That means they can quickly accumulate large amounts of dust, dirt, pollen and other debris from both inside and outside your home. A solar shade is one of the best products you can install on your home to create a protective layer against the sun. However, many homeowners worry about how to maintain their new shades. Thankfully, they don’t require as much maintenance. If they become dusty, it is best to use mild soapy water and a soft cloth to clean your screen. It is important to scrub in multiple directions, as these screens tend to have a tight weave to help build a barrier against the sun. After you have finished cleaning your screen, it is recommended to lightly dry the shade. Alternatively, if your screen isn’t very dirty, lightly cleaning it with a feather duster is also a suitable option to remove any unclean spots.

Cellular Shades

Cellular shades are one of the most versatile window coverings on the market. Cellular shades sometimes referred to as pleated or honeycomb shades are built with small honeycomb-shaped pockets or ‘cells’ designed to keep air from escaping or entering your home to enhance your room’s energy efficiency. They are also one of the easiest shades to clean, just use the dusting tool on your vacuum. Give them a once-over on low suction and you are done, it’s that simple! After dusting, most stains can be lightly blotted away with a sponge, lukewarm water and mild dish detergent (clear). Helpful tip: Dab, don’t rub the fabric.

Roman Shades

Roman shades are a popular solution for those who admire the elegant look of draperies but want the modern conveniences of window shades. They are a unique style of window covering that uses a variety of materials and offers two-fold styles. Cleaning roman shades should resemble the way you clean draperies and/or curtains. This process should take place while the shades are in the lowered position, giving you access to all the material that is exposed on a regular basis. Start with the fold section closest to the top, and gently vacuum the material in a downward direction. If necessary, spot-clean any stains with a cloth dipped in water and mild dishwashing detergent, but do not saturate the material. Rinse and blot dry.

Sheer Shades

Sheer shades are innovative products that offer the privacy benefits of a window shade with the softening view of a sheer. They are one of the most lightweight, gentle fabrics and it is extremely important to take care of them the right way.  First, remove any light accumulations of dirt and dust by gently running the feather duster along every exposed surface of the shade, starting at the top and working your way down to the bottom. Next, use your vacuum with its soft brush attachment to remove any additional dirt, dust, or pollen from your shades. Finally, immerse a sponge or soft cloth in warm water with a mild soap mixture (wring it thoroughly to avoid causing water damage to your shades). Gently wipe along every exposed surface of the shades to remove light stains or dirt and dust accumulations.

Roller Shades

Roller shades are one of our more popular and highly customizable window coverings. Available in a wide variety of colors and fabrics, Budget Blinds roller shades feature diverse light-filtering options for greater flexibility when it comes to light control. To clean classic vinyl roller shades, vacuum both sides with a soft brush tool picking up small pieces of dust and dirt. Start from the top and go side-to-side working your way down. Next, use a sponge dipped in warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent (wrung out) gently cleaning any excess dirt or stains. Leave the shade fully extended to dry.
