New Year’s Resolutions: Twelve-Month Challenge

It’s that time of year again, after months of festive meals and holiday drinks, we turn our attention to self-improvement with New Year resolutions. We tend to make elaborate goals, like working out every day, which we fail to keep going past January.

What if we committed to just one achievable resolution each month? Everything is easier to accomplish when you know it is only for a short period of time. Are you ready to start our twelve-month challenge to a better you? Here are New Year resolutions that are more exciting than joining a gym.

January: Drink more water

Let’s start 2018 by drinking more water! We challenge you to drink a liter of water a day for the month of January. Drinking water helps maintain the balance of body fluids, can help control calories, helps energize muscles, keeps your skin looking good and helps your kidneys. Bottoms up!

February: Turn your phone off

Try switching off your smartphone for a couple hours each day. Engage with your family without being distracted by Facebook. February is the shortest month of the year, you can do it!

March: Thirty minutes of physical activity

Just thirty minutes a day of physical activity will have you looking and feeling great. Whether that is going for a jog, playing outside with your kids or walking the grocery store. You don’t have to be a gym member to get your daily fitness.

April: Save money

It doesn’t need to be a lot, but starting a habit of saving a little money each month will benefit you in the long run. Let’s start by saving $100 in the month of April and see how long we can continue. Ready. . . set. . . save!

May: Reach out to an old friend

We all have friends that we may have lost touch with throughout the years. Take the time to reach out and see how they are doing. You never know what they may be going through and a simple gesture from you may make their year! So, pick up the phone or write a nice letter, what are you waiting for? 

June: Use your manners

A simple please and thank addressed to someone who is serving you a cup of coffee or opening your door will go a long way. We challenge you to use your manners in the month of June.

July: Smile more

Smiling is not only good for you but those around you! It doesn’t cost anything and won’t take time out of your day. Did you smile just now while reading this? Felt good, right?

August: Cook a different recipe each week

Dust off the cookbooks in your kitchen and challenge yourself to one new recipe a week! Find your inner Bobby Flay and get creative with your meals.

September: Read a book

Is there a book you have been wanting to read for quite some time? Kids are back at school and this month should be focused on something you want to do! Grab a cup of coffee, find your perfect chair and dive into a book this month. You deserve it.

October: Hug more

A hug is an underused greeting. Did you know that hugging is extremely effective at healing loneliness, stress, and anxiety? We challenge you to hug your mom and dad, your brothers and sisters, your kids and friends more often in the month of October. You may be surprised by the power of a good hug.

November: Set a budget

Holiday shopping has begun and that can put a strain on your wallet. Set a budget for yourself this holiday and make sure not to go over! Keep track of what you are spending along the way so there are no surprises to your bank account come January.

December: Give back

This holiday, we challenge you to give back. Whether you donate to your favorite charity or volunteer at your local soup kitchen. Take December to reflect on what matter most.

Our twelve-month challenge is not only doable but meaningful! Take each New Year resolution month by month and by the end of the year we hope you have a few new habits that will last a lifetime.
