How Long Should My Curtains Be?
You want curtains and are wondering how long should they be. You may be thinking, “Do I hang them off the floor or have them puddle onto the floor?”
The answer depends on a couple of questions:
- How busy is the space where you are hanging the curtains? Is it a high traffic area?
- Do you plan to open and close the curtains daily?
A room with a lot of activity or in a high traffic area is not a good place to hang drapes that puddle on the floor. In fact, if you have children and or pets, curtains hanging on the floor are not practical! Think muddy shoes and dirty paws.
Secondly, if you plan to open and close them daily, curtains or drapes that break or puddle on the floor will be difficult to open and close. Additionally, moving them across the floor will cause more wear and tear along the hem from daily use.
The most practical option is to hang your drapes just off the floor, approx. ½”. This allows the drapes to flow freely and glide open and closed. Curtains that are hung just off the floor give a custom look, like they were made to perfectly fit your windows. Note: don’t hang them several inches off the floor. This will appear as if you mis-measured or shrunk them in the dryer!
