Budget Blinds® and our manufacturing partner, Springs Window Fashions® who produces our high-quality line of Signature Series® window coverings, committed together to make a donation of $15,000 to Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC) in 2015 in support of the incredible ministry they perform aiding Canada’s ill and injured Armed Forces members, veterans and their families.
The presentation of the check recently took place on July 30, during the Budget Blinds’ annual Canadian Summit–two days of networking and business empowerment that brought together our Canadian franchisees, product vendors and extra-special guests: Wounded Warrior Canada officials, Executive Director, Scott Maxwell, and National Program Director, Phil Ralph.
In the midst of all the training, education and vendor presentations for our vast array of products, including blinds, shutters, shades, curtains, drapes, decorative hardware and more, special time was devoted to focusing on the Budget Blinds and WWC partnership.
A time for giving back
During an evening of celebration and a delectable dinner, Phil Ralph shared real-life experiences that exemplify the vital importance of WWC’s mission. He expressed humble thanks to the corporate sponsors of WWC whose support makes possible the many ministries in the WWC network that provide assistance such as medical (including physical and emotional), housing needs, career assistance, clothing and comprehensive family support.
As an active chaplain in Canada’s Armed Forces, Ralph has the opportunity to be very hands-on with veterans, active service members and their families. The audience was brought to tears as he shared about the toughest part of his job—informing families when a loved one has died. Ralph told the story of one returning veteran who was, in appearance, strong and physically fit, but so mentally damaged and in emotional pain that he committed suicide by laying down on train tracks. From a distance, it’s easy to forget the reality of what military service sometimes means, especially the severity of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that impacts so many who serve.
Renee Coloman, Budget Blinds Director of Corporate Communications, shared her impression: “As I listened to Phil Ralph speak about his role of informing family members about the loss of their loved one, I was moved greatly. His heartfelt speech compelled me to want to help bring awareness to Wounded Warriors Canada and their cause: honoring the fallen and helping the living. Life is precious, and the sacrifices veterans and their families make to secure our freedom are truly a gift. I can’t thank our veterans and WWC enough for all they do.”
Raising awareness, generating support
Supporting WWC is indeed an honor and privilege, helping to touch lives with healing and renewing care. The Budget Blinds commitment to raise awareness and generate support for Wounded Warriors Canada is just one of the ways we give back to those who have served. Veteran support has been part of the Budget Blinds’ corporate fabric for many years:
- Through programs that assist veterans with becoming franchise business owners: $15,000 fee discount (ongoing); Million Dollar Franchise Event (completed Q1,2015) that awarded over $1 million to qualifying veterans; Troops in Transition (launched Q1, 2015) which offers an open door to franchise ownership to qualified veterans preparing to exit or having exited a branch of the military within the past two years
- Aligning with Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) in the U.S. to provide faux wood blinds for the specially adapted homes they build for severely wounded veterans post-9/11
- Through individual veteran-assist projects by Corporate and individual franchisees
