The Pros and Cons of Cellular Shades
When it comes to window coverings, the options can seem endless. We understand! That’s why at Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix, we do our best to get you the information you need so you can find the best fit for both your home and your budget. Today, we’re going to go over some of the pros and cons of one of our favorite window coverings: cellular shades.
Cellular Shades - Pros and Cons
First things first, we should probably discuss the name, “cellular shades.” Cellular shades are the same thing as honeycomb shades. The cells that make up cellular shades look like a honeycomb when viewed from the side. Both names are interchangeable, though we prefer to stick to the industry standard and use “cellular” instead of “honeycomb.”
Here at Budget Blinds we stick to the industry standard, labeling them cellular shades. Even if we have a different name for them, we can certainly help you understand the pros and cons of these wonderful kinds of shades!
Customizable and Stylish
While every window covering option we have at Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix is stylish, cellular shades hold a special place in our hearts for their unique shade, customizability, and texture.
When we say customizability, we mean their shape. Cellular shades can fit almost any window out there — large windows, small windows, half-moon windows, arches — you name it and cellular shades can cover it.
For even more style points, pair up your shades with draperies and a valance for a finished look. It also adds a pop of color, better insulation, and can provide more lighting control.
Function
Function covers a few different things. When it comes to shades, the big one of course is light control.
Cellular shades from Budget Blinds have a range of different levels of opacity to allow as much light as you want into your home! Light control isn’t the only kind of function out there either, as privacy is a huge concern. Our dual top-down/bottom-up cellular shades tackle both, offering maximum versatility, making them a popular option for privacy and lighting control.
We can also add blackout liners to the back of the shades to achieve total darkness! So whether you want to bask in a warm, diffused glow, or relax in the dark, cellular shades can totally do that for you.
Safe
Cellular shades are safer by design! All of our cellular shades are designed without cords making them safer for families with young children and pets.
Beat the Heat
When it comes to Phoenix and Tempe, one of the biggest concerns we have is temperature control. We want to keep the summer sun out and the winter heat in — because yes, it can get cold here in the desert! Cellular shades excel in insulation — they are one of the best window treatments on the market for it! How? It’s all in their design.
The cells being an open structure are filled with air. As the sunshine and heat transfers through the glass of the window, it then pushes through the fabric of the shade and warms the air in that cell instead of the air in your home. This heat is trapped and slowed from transferring straight from the outdoors into your home.
Noise Cancellation
The design of these shades don’t just block heat, they block outside noise! It’s not 100% sound proofing, but they do dampen sound from the street better than other window treatments, such as blinds or roller shades. They keep the echo inside the room to a minimum as well!
The Disadvantages of Honeycomb Shades
No window treatment is perfect, though cellular shades are pretty dang close. Here are some of the disadvantages that come with them.
Not Right for Every Room
Like all window treatments, you have to be selective about what room they go in. Cellular shades are not the best option for rooms with high humidity, such as laundry rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.
More Difficult to Clean
Unlike other window coverings that are sturdy and easy to wipe down, cellular shades can be a little more difficult to clean correctly. The cells that give them all their power can also collect dust, so you have to be careful and particular about cleaning them out when they need it.
Privacy
Without a blackout liner, cellular shades diffuse light rather than block it. This means that light, including the light inside your home or your shadow, can permeate through them — the inside of your home won’t be invisible! It will be covered, but you will be able to see the outline of your furniture (or people in the home) depending on the lighting.
