The Do’s and Don’ts of New Window Treatments
There are a few rules to keep in mind when you choose your new window treatments. Today, we at Budget Blinds of Tempe are going over the dos and don’ts of window treatments.
The DO’s of New Window Treatments
Consider the Natural Light
Every room has a different amount of natural light that you may or may not want to preserve. The living room, for example, may benefit the most from a warm and diffused glow in the evenings, while your bedroom should be dark and private.
If you move homes, we recommend going a full 24 hours without window treatments to see how the light hits every room and to see how it will affect your furniture and your peace of mind. You may want shutters in the living room to block the glare on your television and shades in the dining room and kitchen so you can easily watch your kids as they play in the backyard.
Identify your lighting needs and DO make sure that your window treatments match them.
Look at the Whole Room
A room is more than four walls and a doorway. It’s the place where your family gathers, where you can relax, and where you can have fun. When you first move into a home, it may be difficult to see the room’s full potential, but it’s something you should 100% DO before you purchase new window treatments.
Consider everything from the lighting to the colors and materials. Choose something within your style and something you think you will love for 10+ years. It’s important not to settle at this stage — if you don’t like it, when you likely won’t grow to like it in a few years. Also consider the furniture you want to own down the line. If you have cheaper furniture that you’ll want to upgrade, consider keeping your room and the window treatments more color neutral so they will match the new furniture you bring into your home.
Consider The Amount of Privacy
Every room has a use and every room’s window treatments should reflect that use. A bedroom is for sleeping and getting ready for the day, therefore you’ll want the most privacy there. A dining room might be more inviting and cheerful, while a bathroom will be shuttered off from the outside world.
Every window treatment has a different level of privacy they can give. Knowing that, and knowing what rooms you want to keep private, are essential. DO consider adding a privacy liner as well to window shades to increase the privacy they offer!
Consider the Shape of the Window
Not all windows are built for shutters, and not all windows are built for blinds. Tall windows, for example, benefit the most from shades because they’re lightweight and easy to operate, while arched windows benefit the most from drapes and curtains.

The Don’ts of New Window Treatments
There are two things you should never do: mismatch every room in the house and skip out on practicality. You don’t need to dress every window the same way, but your home should have a uniform look. The bedrooms should all have one type of window covering, as should the living room, dining room, and probably the kitchen (depending on the type of window treatment you choose).
Secondly, never choose style over function. If you have a window treatment over the sink, you want something that is water-resistant and practical to use, not something that will warp and crack from the moisture. If you have brick walls, consider window treatments with interior mounts to avoid drilling into the stone. If you have kids or pets, consider cordless options to increase their safety.
