The Best Window Treatments for Window Seats

They’re not a common feature in most houses, and that’s something that makes window seats just so unique. Have some window seats in your home? Then you know that choosing the perfect window covering can make or break the whole vibe of the seat! This time on the Budget Blinds of Tempe we’re talking window treatments for window seats read on and be inspired!

What to Consider When Buying Window Seat Window Coverings

There’s one thing that is crucial to consider when it comes to window seats and their coverings. The whole idea of window seats is that people will be sitting against the window covering as they sit in the seat. That will inform everything from there.

What Coverings to Consider

Because people will be sitting against the covering, think about getting a treatment that’s soft & durable enough for being leaned against.  This means things like Roman shades, woven wood shades, roller shades for softness. Shutters are another option for being durable, they could stand up to sitting on.

We don’t recommend blinds, in either wood or faux wood varieties, or cellular shades. These are more likely to be damaged if anyone was to sit against them and press them into the glass.

Know What You Want

Window seats can work well to create a specific vibe in your home, so know what kind of vibe you’re looking for! For a truly Victorian library feel, think about mounting curtains outside the window opening. Then you can close the curtains to create a secret, cozy hideaway!

If you go that way and you have a particular deep window seat, look into motorization! You can use a cordless motorized lift to open and close the curtains. No exposed cords mean it’s safer for the little ones too!

Ok, so all that out of the way, let’s look at the three best options for your window seat!

Option #1 - Shades

As we mentioned, window shades are one of the best options for your window seats. Shades are a no muss, no fuss option. They won’t interfere with the bench or anything else in the close space. They’re a clean, soft, classic look. You can shade each window separately to better control the sunlight or use one large, custom rounded shade to stay in front of all the windows at the same time.  Roman shades, roller shades, or sheer shades are all perfect for the window seat scenario.

If you have young kids running around at home, vinyl roller shades and solar shades can be a great choice too. Vinyl and solar shades can be wiped down for easy cleaning, and don’t forget the cordless lift for safety!

If your window seat has a bench or cushion, think about getting Roman or roller shades with a fabric/print that matches, pair with some color coordinating pillows!

Option #2 - Drapes

Some window seats are built in such a way that they sit beneath bay windows, making for a large space. When it comes to a large space like this, drapes are perhaps a perfect option for bay windows! Drapes create a cozy feel and look while addressing the shade and insulation needs. You have two options here, and both are great! One is to have the drapes cover just the window. The other, and perhaps more impressive option, is to have the drapes covering the window seat completely! The bench is always ready for use if you use drapes just for the windows, but if you cover the area completely you can A) move the drapes to the side to sit and use the bench or, as we mentioned earlier, use the bench with the drapes covering it to create a little reading sanctuary!

Make your space even more relaxing by motorizing your drapes, controlling your preference without moving from your nest.

Option #3 - Shutters

Shutters, or Wood Shutters, provide a more architectural, structured look to the window seat and the room as a whole. We’ve talked about shutters plenty before and about how shutters are one of the only window coverings that will add value to your home (in the case of selling it). Window shutters would be fixed to the windows, creating a clean, clear look. However, depending on the size of the shutters they could take up some window seat real estate you don’t want to give up. So really figure out your measurements and choices before deciding to go with shutters. A usable window seat might not be your main interest and that’s ok!
