The Best Blinds for a Rustic Style

Imagine the luxurious and welcoming warmth of bringing the outside in. Rustic style is all about natural comforts and the simpler life. It surrounds you in rich and warm natural tones, real wood, and makes you feel like you’re living in a log cabin retreat, even in the bustling city. When it comes to rustic designs, no detail can be overlooked, not even your windows. You need the best blinds for a rustic style so you don’t break the immersion. Picture having white blinds against a wood panel wall — they stick out in a not-so-desirable way. Instead, try these options.

What is a Rustic Design/Style?

Rustic is thrown out there to describe anything and everything that features wood elements, from farmhouse decor to a Tuscan-style estate, but what does it actually mean? It simply means natural, rough, ages, and casual. You don’t need to live in a wood lodge to be in a rustic home, you just need a home that brings in those elements.

One of the defining characteristics of a rustic home is the use of natural materials like wood, stone, textured fabrics: canvas, and burlap. The design is usually simple with an earthy feel, which means a lot of neutral tones, mixed with browns, greens, and grays. Think exposed wood beams over a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace.

Now that you know what rustic style is, what window treatments fit the bill?

Rustic Window Treatments

As you can probably best, the best window treatment for a rustic style is wood!

Faux Wood Blinds

If you live in a place with a lot of moisture, humidity, or extreme weather conditions, you’ll want to go with faux wood blinds. They’re made with PVC, meaning they are more resistant to cracking, warping, and are easier to clean. Unfortunately, faux wood blinds have the exact same fake wood grain on every slat, which is visible to the naked eye.

However, they do still achieve the same feel as real wood and they are more affordable than real wood blinds. They also look great!

Real Wood Blinds

Real wood blinds are perfect for a rustic home, as they bring in the warmth of rich wood tones and natural materials. They are a little more finicky than faux wood, which means they can’t be exposed to a lot of moisture — especially when you’re cleaning them — and they can fade in the sunlight.

However, real wood blinds create that authentic rustic style that you just can’t beat. We recommend pairing them with curtains to really frame and highlight the window while giving them that casual and comfortable feel rustic homes are known for.

Woven Wood Shades

If you don’t like blinds, then worry not! Woven wood shades are the perfect complement to rustic styles. They are made from natural material, such as wood, bamboo, and jute, and have an organic texture that really pops in the sunlight. Most woven wood shades can’t fully block light either (you’ll need a liner if you want that), which means they let in diffused sunlight. This type of lighting is great for rustic styles, as it helps bring out the warm tones and colors!

They also offer different levels of privacy and opacity depending on its weave. The thicker the weave, the more privacy you will have, which means you may be able to avoid adding a liner to them. However, this means it’s even more important to get a few samples of woven wood first, so you know exactly what to expect when it’s installed in your home. Wood Shutters

Shutters go with any style — even rustic. They’re more classic and extremely versatile, meaning you can get shutters in nearly any color and shade, including real wood. Like wood blinds, each slat will be unique, to really emphasize the natural wood feel. They often do feel more modern, though, so they may look out of place if you’re going for an antique rustic feel.

Shutters are also a costly investment that, if taken care of, will last for decades. All you need to do is remember that real wood shutters need to be treated like real wood — keep them dry and in a room without drastic temperature changes or humidity.

Thankfully, cleaning them is an absolute breeze. Wood shutters tend to only need weekly dusting to keep them looking amazing. You can polish them with a gentle wood polish every now and then as well to help repel dust, sun damage, and water.
