Styling Your Bedroom to Match Your Windows

When it comes to styling your rooms, window placement is absolutely one of the biggest concerns! In living rooms you might arrange your sofa and TV in the best possible angle to avoid any unwanted glare, in other rooms you’ll want to maximize the amount of light that gets in. It’s the same thing with bedrooms! How do you arrange and style your room when you have bedroom windows to consider? Read on! Budget Blinds Tempe is here to help!

So your bedroom has a bunch of windows, or a couple really big ones. Awesome! You’re getting a ton of natural light in there and that’s great. But that also means you might have doors or windows on every wall and all the sudden you have to ask yourself,  “Just where am I putting this bed? What about a tv?” With windows come considerations and design challenges – thankfully we’re here to help!

Can the Bed Go In Front of the Window: Yay or Nay?

Nay. Mostly nay,  we should say.

A lot of the ideas behind how you can lay out your home comes from the whole idea of Feng Shui and according to that a bed in front of a window is no good. But there’s practical reasons too! If your bed is in front of a window, anything in the window will go right over your head in the worst way – Noises, lights, weather, all of that can keep you up at night.

And you don’t want that! You’ll be spending your days grumpy and short-tempered, as you suffer each night.

If you must place your bed there, and there may be reasons for that, there are a few things you can do to help! Hang heavy curtains and get a bead with a solid headboard. These two things will create barriers between the window and you helping to block out the sounds and light from outside. This barrier can also create a sense of security and safety which is crucial for a sound night’s sleep.

How to Design It Like You Mean It

So, if you absolutely can’t avoid putting your bed in front of the window what do you do? You design the room to make it look like it was a deliberate choice and not a necessary one!

If You Can, Center It

If you’re able, centering the bed in front of the window is a good first step to making the bed and window placement feel deliberate.

Double Layer

Use heavy drapes as well as blinds or shades to fully cover the window. Protect your face from the suns rays with a sheer window covering, like a neutral shade, and heavier curtains to get the best of both worlds. A sheer shade will let the natural light still filter in while the heavier curtains can block the window entirely when you’re ready to crash, regardless of the sun!

If you’re a big Fen Shui-er, that double layer is also clutch as it creates a barrier that keep energy from flowing freely in and out of the room – a key concern apparently.

If You Can’t Center, Fill

If your bed can’t possibly sit center in front of the window, because of a weird shaped room or odd window placement, you’re going to have to work a bit harder to make everything sit right. Run a curtain rod across the entire wall and run panels that are full-height floor to ceiling. This will dampen the offset look of a window and bed not being aligned, giving a sense of symmetry.

Frame It

Here’s an interesting idea - use curtains to frame the bed frame! This will do two things. One, it will make the bed look more elegant, like a classical four poster. Two, it will make the bed the focal point of the room, drawing eyes to it rather than the window.

What Coverings to Use

So if those are the tricks to making it all look right, what treatments should you focus on?

Shades – Only use high-end looking fabrics. Add valances to really take it over the top.

Blinds – For blinds focus on simple, classic looks. This will help them pair with any curtain you go for.
