Spring Cleaning Your Blinds
March is right around the corner and you know what that means! Spring is basically here! Especially in Arizona, the end of February heats up plenty enough – even if the sun still sets early. So is it time to get your house ready for the new season? This time on the Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix blog: Spring Cleaning your Blinds!
Spring Clean Your Blinds
Blinds are a great addition to any home. They provide privacy, lighting control, and add plenty of style to your home – unfortunately you know what else that comes with? Upkeep! Just like everything else, from furniture to flooring you need to stay on top of cleaning them to keep them working well and keeping you healthy! Blinds can gather dust, pet hair and dander, dirt, and more.
Thankfully, cleaning your blinds is easier than you probably realize! You can use all the cleaning tools you already have to protect your window coverings. First, it’s time for some prep work!
Prepare
The first part of prep work, the first part if you will, is to figure out what your blinds are made out of. Depending on their material, you’ll want to approach the job of cleaning them differently. So this might be one of the most crucial steps.
Then gather all of your supplies, including vacuum cleaner, a microfiber cloth, rag, feather duster, or even an old sock, mild soap, step stool, or ladder (as needed), and if your blinds are real wood a wood cleaner.
Dust and/or Vacuum
Alright with the prep work squared away you can actually get right down to it! First, it’s time to dust those blinds. This is fairly simple to do.
- Close your blinds, if the slats overlap leave the blinds open a crack to allow access
- Vertical blinds, start at the top of the slat and wipe down from the ceiling to the floor
- Horizontal slats, start at the top slats, go left to right and work your way down
- Flip the blinds and repeat
If you want to use a vacuum guess what? You can! Use a soft brush attachment and you can replace your simple dusting with some high-power suction.
Clean Stains
If your blinds have stains on them, the good news is that just about anything that caused a stain to your blinds in your home will probably come off with some warm water and a bit of work. If you find that the stain isn’t lifting from the blinds after that, you can use some mild dish soap in warm water to work at the stain.
Remember! You don’t want to get the blinds too wet if you can manage it, especially if they’re wooden blinds as the moisture can cause the wood to warp.
Let’s do a quick lightning round Q&A for other blind cleaning questions!
Why Clean My Blinds?
Because they need it! Your air is full of dust, pet hair and dander, and other contaminants than can coat your blinds and give you bad air quality. Cleaning them regularly will give you cleaner air and keep allergies at bay. Cleaning them regularly will also help the blinds to last longer!
How Frequently Should I Clean My Blinds?
Blinds in higher trafficked rooms will probably need more frequent cleaning than others. A guest room that gets one or two uses a year could get away with light dusting as needed. Just like any cleaning or maintenance task, the more you stay on top of it the easier it will be to do and the less elbow grease it will require!
What Window Coverings Are the Easiest to Clean?
Faux wood blinds are perhaps the easiest to clean blinds while drapes also make for an easy cleaning – simply take them off the wall, toss them into the washer and you’re in business.
