Roman Shades, a Style Guide Pt. 1 - Flat & Soft Folds
Roman shades run the gamut from formal to casual, modern to classic. They’re a stylish option to any window combining the light filtering functionality of a shade with the softness of curtains. At Budget Blinds of Tempe & Central Phoenix we have hundreds of fabrics to choose from and a variety of styles and options, choosing the right style of Roman shades can be a little overwhelming. That’s why we put together this basic rundown of some of the most popular roman shade types!
Styles of Roman Shades
Roman shades have been around for a long time (guess how long) and the styles of them have changed with it. Today’s most popular Roman shade styles have a tailored appearance, with cordless and motorized options. Here are the four most popular styles of Roman Shades:
-
Flat Fold
-
Soft Fold
-
Plain Fold
-
Relaxed Fold
The Flat Fold
As you’ll see the names of most of these styles has to do with the way the shade lays when it is fully lowered. The flat fold is a classic style that lays completely flat when lowered. This makes it the perfect option if you’d like to go for a big, bold print without worrying about seams or creases across the fabric. When the shade is raised, it folds up neatly at the top of the window. It’s easily one of the most affordable options of Roman shade due to its simple construction.
There are a couple negatives to this style though. The shade can look a little too casual for some people’s taste. If the shade isn’t installed in the best way you can also end up with it being a little ‘wavy’ as it shifts with the air. That’s easily avoided using hidden rods to give it a bit more structure.
Take these to the next level with an automation system, especially critical if the window is too large for you to easily operate the shade on our own!
The Soft Fold
The soft fold, also known as the hobbled shade, is constructed in such a way that even when the shade is lowered completely, there is still soft folds of fabric, giving the shade a wonderful softness and texture to it. This style of shade has much more volume to it, making it a great shade for when you plan to have your shades down most of the time. If you think you’re likely to keep your shades up your best bet is to look elsewhere! Because the structure of the shade is so bold, it’s best to pair this with a subtle print or color, unless your particular style is “Everything, All the Time” in which case, hey go for it!
Alright we’ll put a pin the discussion right here for the time being, we still have a lot to talk about when it comes to the two other popular style of Roman shades, the plain and the relaxed folds.
