Our Guide to Matching Rugs And Window Treatments

If you want a complete room, then you can’t overlook two spaces: your windows and your floors. Matching your window treatments and your rugs is essential for a full look. Every window treatment goes well with rugs, so don’t worry too much about that! Our design experts at Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix can help you pick out the perfect look.

Think About The Room First

There are three things to think about before you consider adding both a rug and window treatments to each room.

First, not every room requires both window treatments and rugs. For example, rooms with carpet don’t need rugs, but wood floors and concrete floors are very much needed. They help with sound dampening, protect your floors, and give a nice area to rest your feet.

Additionally, you don’t want to cover up every inch of the floor either, especially if you have natural wood floors or a beautiful pattern on them.

Secondly, some windows are statements on their own and not every window requires a rug to match it or enhance the room. If you want to highlight your window, then use bold colors and frame it with valances and drapes and ditch the rug.

Thirdly, consider the size of the room. Adding both window treatments and a rug can make the room feel smaller than it really is. So if you have a small room, consider one of the other (unless it’s a bathroom!).

Once you’ve considered all of this, here are our tips to pair a rug and your window treatments!

Consider the Pattern

Mix up the pattern and the scale of the pattern! We’re not saying you should pair flowery patterns with plaid, but you should consider using small scale patterns and large scale patterns in the same room.

Mix them up! This is probably the most important guideline our design experts have. For example, if you have a large scale pattern on your curtain, you’ll want to choose a rug with a small scale pattern and vice versa. This way, your eyes won’t be in visual overload and it will give your space dimension.

Keep Color In Mind

Every room should have a color palette. In other words, every color in a room should complement each other. For example, blues, whites, grays and yellows all come together cohesively and beautifully. You want your color palette to be pleasing and not overwhelming.

However, don’t let us stop you from displaying your favorite colors and your style. When in doubt, just try it! There can be cohesion in almost any color combination, especially if you keep patterns in mind.

Our recommendation is choosing complementary colors for your rugs and window treatments instead of trying to match them perfectly. It adds pops of color to the room and creates a few statements for your eyes to follow, without it being too much. So if you use dark blue drapes, consider a white, gray, or yellow rug to match them. Consider the pattern too! If your drapes have red flowers on a white background, choose a red rug to match them.

Finally, Don’t Go Overboard with Patterns or Textures

We said it earlier, but it cannot be said enough: patterns are super important. Don’t be too matchy, but don’t be too different either. Some patterns just don’t match well together. On the flip side, some patterns should be a one-time statement and not repeated all over the room. This goes for every pattern: flowery, plaid, geometric, stripes, spots — everything.

There is one exception: you can pull it off if the scales are different enough and you have more going on in the space. This will help it feel more natural and not forced.

Additionally, you don’t have to be safe! You can pick whatever patterns and texture in whatever colors you want.

Textures

It’s okay to vary up textures, but like patterns, don’t overdo it. Varying up the textures is the quickest and easiest way to keep a room visually appealing. This works particularly well if you’re going with neutral on neutral. For instance, a velvet curtain paired with a chunky woven rug, or a textural linen drapery combined with a raised tonal tufted pattern on a rug. But avoid using two of the same textures of your rug and window treatments!
