Halloween Decorations That Are Safe For Your Windows

Halloween is right around the corner. If you’ve left decorating to the last minute, we’ve got you covered. Budget Blinds of Tempe compiled a list of fun and spooky Halloween window decorations that are safe for your windows and your window treatments.

First off, you’ll want to avoid placing anything sticky or wet on your windows, as it can stain your blinds, shutters, drapes, and shades. So stay away from window paint, stick-on films as the adhesive can melt, and candles. These things can also permanently stain or streak your windows, paint, or flooring. Some decorations may also be a fire hazard due to excessive heat from open flames or lights.

Instead, try the following Halloween window decoration ideas.

Make a Peeking Ghost

Nothing is scarier than seeing a looming object peering out from behind a curtain. If horror movies have taught us anything, it’s to stay away from windows or to avoid looking through them. You can trigger the same effect with this fun Halloween decoration.

This can be a fun DIY project, or you can use one of the larger Halloween decorations — the effect will still be the same. Here’s what you do: open the curtain slightly and position the ghostly figure like it is peering through your drapes or opening them. They can be backlit or have glowing features to help them stand out once it’s dark outside.

Use Paper Cutouts for Spooky Halloween Window Decorations

Paper cutouts that you carefully hang or out on your window with window-safe tape. The best part is you can make anything you want! All you need are large sheets of colorful paper, scissors, and tape. The shapes can be traced from online templates, or made up as you go! And they’re completely versatile — you can make silhouettes or add faces!

From the popular silhouette of a black cat, to colorful monsters, anything is possible with paper decorations. You can go make a horror-themed abode with dark paper cutouts that are backlit or have glowing eyes, such as cats, witches, spiders, or spiderwebs, or something more fun and colorful like fuzzy monsters, pumpkins, or scarecrows.

Put yourself in the shoes of trick-or-treaters: would younger or older kids enjoy your decorations? Would your house be more approachable with spooky figures looming in the windows, or fun and colorful monsters waving at them?

The choice is yours!

Try Hanging Decorations

Some Halloween window decorations look better when they’re hung, like a giant tarantula looming on a web over the window, or a zombie dangling through an open window, or even an unfortunate witch who didn’t realize the window was closed until too late. You can also go the cute route with hanging pumpkins or tissue ghosts

You can easily make these yourself too. For example, you can make a spiderweb by cutting a black trash bag up like a snowflake, or you can make a handful of ghosts from tissue paper and hang them at various heights from the curtain rod. These projects are a great way to get your kids involved too.

These decorations should always have some sort of lighting behind them to really make them pop. Some of them will have lights built-in, but just make sure you turn them off for the night to avoid any fire hazards.

Alternatively, you can purchase bat-themed curtains. Pull back your drapes and hang these to spread a little Halloween cheer in a safe and completely temporary way.

Exterior Window Decorations

If you don’t want to put anything inside, we’ve got you covered. These exterior decorations will be fun and are risk-free when it comes to damaging your window treatments

If you have the time, you can create a terrifying zombie zone. You’ll need a zombie dummy (head, torso and arms works just fine), some wooden beams (can be fake), and a little fishing wire. The idea is to board up the area around the window like a box, and have the zombie look like it is breaking through the boards. You can also add sound or lights! It’s a great touch that will wow your neighbors and won’t be too scary for kids.

You can also add most of the previously mentioned projects too, like tarantulas, witches, or anything bulky to the exterior of your home. If you’re looking for something more fun, you can make a “witches crossing” sign and have witches “fly” in front of your window so they’re illuminated by your interior lights, or you can set pumpkins in your window sills, or add cobwebs to your exterior shutters.

The possibilities for Halloween window decorations are endless!
