Can You Paint Vinyl Shutters and other FAQs

Can You Paint Vinyl Shutters?

You sure can, though we generally don’t recommend it. Our shutters here are built for a specific look and painting them can do more harm than good. The reason this might even be in question is because you need to use very specific paints for vinyl surfaces. You want to avoid cheap latex paints and instead look at acrylics, either urethane-modified or water-based 100% acrylic. We’ve talked more about painting shutters here.

Can I Spray Paint My Shutters?

Again, you can though we don’t generally recommend it. But so long as you are making sure you have the right kind of paint for the job, spray painting shutters can be the fastest way to bring some fresh life to them. Just make sure you take them down first. Otherwise, you might end up with some stray spray across the side of your home - and nobody wants that! Using an airless sprayer (you can usually rent these from a paint shop) is another option.

Are Shutters Better Than Blinds?

Interesting question! Shutters and blinds are different in a few ways, the biggest is how they’re installed. Blinds are installed inside the home, either inside or above the window frame. Shutters, typically, are attached to the window frame itself to make it more durable, sturdy covering. So better? They’re more safe for children and pets as they don’t have dangling cords but blinds are traditionally more affordable. So let’s go with no, shutters aren’t better than blinds, they’re just different.

What Is The Best Material for Shutters?

Best is a matter of debate but some of our favorite materials include: Hardwoods, composite woods, poly vinyl chloride are pretty solid too. With so many great ones out there, the best material is the one that fits your needs and desires.

Can I Use Curtains with My Plantation Shutters?

You sure can! Using curtains, shutters, drapes or valances in conjunction is a great way to add space, texture, and style  to your windows. In the case of plantation shutters you’ll want to move curtains up and out! Get a curtain rod long enough to open the curtains up wider than the windows and move the curtain rod above the frame as well. This also helps make your windows look taller!

Do Shutters Help Insulate?

They sure do! Shutters block out the light Plantation shutters especially can help cut down on the heat or cool loss thanks to being installed flush with the walls.

How Long do Plantation Shutters Last?

Plantation shutters can easily last 10 - 25 years! And they don’t need much help getting there as they are perhaps the most low maintenance window covering out there!
