Designer Secrets to Mixing Patterns Successfully with Window Coverings

Ever wonder how to mix patterns to create that perfectly polished look, without it looking 'too busy'? Keep these 3 golden rules in mind, you will be an expert at combining patterns:

  1. Stay within the same colour scheme
  2. Mix using different sizes & styles of patterns
  3. Throw in a solid colour to give the eye a rest

Window coverings and pillows are the ideal way to incorporate pattern into your room to create that 'wow' factor and allow your personality to shine through.

In this photo, you can see the 3 Secrets of Mixing Patterns Successfully in action:

  1.  Colour Scheme: Choose colours that blend beautifully and when set on the same neutral background, make the mix even more eye-pleasing. Don't feel compelled to match colours perfectly, but try to find patterns that have at least one colour that is similar. The floral fabric on the pillow was the inspiration to create the colour scheme for this space.
  2. Different size & style of patterns: The pattern on the pillow is a different scale compared to the medium-sized geometric pattern in the drapery panels. We can see that the floral pattern paired with the geometric design works in this space as the colour is repeated in the same placid blue.
  3. A solid colour to give the eye a rest: This is done with the red accent pillow that is strategically placed between the floral pillow and geometric drape to give the eye a rest. The white chair and white sheers also help to create some relief and highlight the colours and patterns at the same time.

  1. Colour Scheme: inspiration came from the drapery fabric for this room. Grey is used in the fabric horizontal blinds behind to create depth and a layered look. We also see the grey in the carpet, artwork and accent pillows. For the yellow, there is a yellow vase on the shelf, accent pillows and the yellow roses on the coffee table.
  2. Different size & style of patterns: We have a large pattern on the carpet and a medium pattern on the drapery panels, which complement each other
  3. A solid colour to give the eye a rest: The solid colour blinds, carpet, and the alternating solid accent pillows nicely give a break for the eye.
