Where To Use Vertical Blinds
Vertical blinds have one commonplace in a home: to cover sliding doors. What if we told you that there were other places to use them? We at Budget Blinds of North Glendale are huge advocates for vertical blinds in places you wouldn’t expect them and today’s blog is going to go over it all.
When to Use Vertical Blinds
While traditional horizontal blinds can be custom-made to fit sliding doors and wide windows, they simply aren’t practical in many instances. Vertical blinds fit better and they’re easily opened and closed while covering most real estate.
Vertical blinds are ideal for wide windows too! They’re designed to fit a variety of openings that may be too large for traditional window coverings, or in places where you don’t want to invest too much into custom shades or shutters due to humidity or potential damage.
Their up-and-down design allows for seamless light control. Windows that face east or west may benefit most from this style. In addition, many homeowners also consider vertical blinds easier to clean than the horizontal variety.
Vinyl vertical blinds are also a great addition to any room. They come in a variety of weaves and colors. They provide years of crisp, wrinkle-free operation with invisible, sewn-in weights. Budget Blinds of North Glendale offers vertical blinds available with a range of operation options such as chain control, wand tilt, right draw, left draw, and split draw for convenience and personalized view control.
Benefits of Vertical Blinds
Vertical blinds are super easy to clean. Thanks to gravity, they don’t accumulate much dust or pet hair. On top of that, they’re moisture resistant too! They’re commonly made from two materials that are highly resistant to moisture: PVC and faux wood. That means more cleaning products can be used without worrying about colors fading or staining, and they can get wet without fear of them warping.
To clean them, you can either run a duster down them or use a vacuum brush attachment. It’s super easy to do and takes about 5 minutes. For stubborn spots, you can blot clean.
Where Not To Use Them
We don’t recommend using them in front of your house. They don’t offer the most privacy so there is a chance people could see into your home, even when they’re closed. Vertical blinds tend to move a lot — they sway in breezes from wind, air conditioning, fans, and when they’re opened and closed, which creates gaps in privacy.
Vertical blinds also don’t cut it for normal-sized or thin windows. Horizontal blinds or shades work better here. Fabric vertical blinds also don’t work when they touch the floor. They can pick up dirt and grime and be a nightmare to clean. Use them higher up to avoid this.
Don’t use them if you want something that will last a lifetime. Vertical blinds can indeed last 10+ years when you take good care of them, but they are the most susceptible to damage because they’re commonly used in front of sliding doors. They move a lot, see a lot of foot traffic, and can get pulled down if they’re not treated with care. If you have kids or pets, we recommend using more durable options. Our design specialists can find the perfect fit for you.
They’re also not great if you want a quiet window covering. Vertical blinds clang together when they move. If you have young kids or noise-sensitive pets, they may not be the best option.
Finally, if you want to enjoy the view, they’re more obstructive than other options, such as shades. You can push them to the side, but they will still take more room than any horizontal alternatives due to their bulkiness.
Vertical Window Blinds Alternatives
If you’re not sold on the idea of installing vertical blinds, we understand. They’re not the best option out there to provide privacy — the slats tend to move more than other window treatments — and they can’t block out all light because they’re not flush with a window.
While they are great for wide windows and sliding doors, you aren’t locked into one option. You can look at cellular shades, roman shades, and natural wood blinds. They offer all of the same benefits of privacy, view control, and light control.
To help you find window-covering solutions that match your existing home décor, Budget Blinds of Tempe and Central Phoenix offer these in a wide variety of cell sizes, fabrics, colors, and opacities too!
