How To Repair Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are a tried and true window covering seen throughout the Valley and for good reason. They’re great for privacy and covering larger windows, as well as sliding glass doors, which are also extremely common in Valley homes since we can enjoy the sun almost year-round. However, if you own vertical blinds, then you know how easily a rambunctious child or pet can mess them up.

This time on the Budget Blinds of North Glendale blog we are going to answer a few of the most commonly asked questions including how to fix vertical blinds, how to clean them, and more!

How to Fix Vertical Blinds

How to fix vertical blinds is a big one, and it really depends on the damage and how they came apart. Did the blind just fall from the slot and carrier stem? Are they not closing just right? Are there puncture holes or were they torn off the carrier system? Here are the common fixes for the most common problems.

Blinds Won’t Turn

Are the blinds not closing all the way? In most cases, this is a quick fix. Vertical blinds stack on top of each other when you’re opening or closing them. In most cases, this stack can interfere with their turning. Take a close look at each blind individual. It’s possible that one of them just got flipped backward or one of the blind’s top corners is stuck behind another blind.

Fix Torn Blinds

Did a blind get ripped from the stem? This is very common if you have pets or children that like to play with and tug the blinds. If this happens, don’t worry. Most of the time, you can fix it without buying a replacement.

You can buy a blind repair kit at most home furnishing stores, or simply use tape to cover the torn blind. It’s not a permanent solution but it should work until your kids are old enough to know better, or until your pet learns that blinds are friends, not toys.

Broken Carrier Stem

If your blind looks like it’s in fine shape but it won’t stay attached to the carrier system, then it’s possible you have a broken carrier. Use a flashlight and look at the carrier itself (the rod above your window that the blinds are attached to). Replacing the stems is pretty easy if you have a spare part and pliers at your disposal. If not, you should find both in a hardware store.

Puncture Holes

Puncture holes are a tough fix, especially if your vertical blinds are made from a type of fabric. PVC vertical blinds can be fixed with liquid rubber and paint, or just tape if you expect your dog or cat to bite them again, while vinyl or synthetic polyester fabrics will likely need to be replaced.

How to Clean Vertical Blinds

There are two parts to cleaning blinds: traditional dusting and cleaning.

To dust, take a duster or a dry microfiber cloth and work from top to bottom. You can also use a vacuum with a brush attachment to vacuum up the dust. It’s the same process, working from top-down on each blind.

If you need to spot clean the blinds, fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Use a sponge or microfiber cloth and wipe the blinds from top to bottom. Use gentle strokes so as to not bend the blind.

If your vertical blinds are vinyl or fabric, spot clean with a damp cloth. Do not oversaturate them, as this can lead to water stains.

How to Hang Curtains Over Vertical Blinds

There are a few ways to install curtains over vertical blinds. You can install brackets onto the rail that hold up the blinds or drill the brackets right into the wall above the blinds. You can also hire professionals like our owners Chelsea and James Rentschler to help you make the right match!

You can complete the look with a matching valance as well!
