A Complete Guide to Window Shutters
Shutters are one of the most elegant and sophisticated window coverings on the market. There is a style for every household too – from plantation to cafe, you’ll find something you love at Budget Blinds of North Glendale, guaranteed.
The Benefits of Window Shutters
On top of being one of the most stylish window treatments, window shutters are also proven to increase your home’s value. Shutters are a huge selling point for potential buyers, as they add a lifetime of value, privacy, and amazing insulation. On top of that, they match almost any style and home furnishings. Shutters also dramatically increase curb appeal, which can help your home sell faster!
Shutters are Insulating
Shutters are the one of best insulating window treatments on the market because of how they are installed and because of their thickness. They are perfect for blocking out the sun, trapping heat and cold within your home, and keeping out drafts.
In Arizona, every resident knows how important it is to block out the summer sun, not just for our own comfort but for the sake of our energy bills. A well-fitted and installed piece can naturally reduce heat loss by up to 30% and can stop up to 50% of radiant heat transfer. That’s a fancy way of saying they help keep your home cool and help keep the heat out.
Unbeatable Privacy
Shutters offer unbeatable privacy as well. Their slated louvers block out any prying eyes when closed and help obscure your home’s interior when they’re open. Because they’re made of sturdy materials like wood, you don’t have to worry about transparency issues either. This makes them perfect for almost every room in the house!
Types of Window Shutters
There are three common types of window shutters. We’ll go over them here.
Plantation Shutters
Plantation shutters are extremely common in homes across the country. These shutters fit the entire length of your window and offer the best insulating properties. They are characterized by their tilted wooden louvers, which are similar to the slats on blinds. Unlike blinds, the shutters are fitted to the window frame and they can be opened out like doors.
They are also great for sliding glass doors and french doors as well!
Plantation shutters are low maintenance and have a long lifespan of 50+ years if they are taken care of.
Plantation shutters are best suited for living rooms, dining rooms, offices, and bedrooms.
Café Shutters
Café shutters are totally different from plantation shutters in how much of the window they cover and how you open and close them. Instead of covering the full window, café shutters only cover about ½ to ⅔ of your windows. They are called half-shutters as well because they leave the top part totally open to give you privacy without obscuring all of the natural light and view.
Café shutters are not suited for all rooms. We recommend using them in your dining room, kitchen, and bathrooms.
Exterior Shutters
Exterior shutters are shutters for outside your home. We’re not talking about the shutters you mount on your siding either – these shutters are specifically designed for patios, pergolas, and covered sitting areas. They are ideal for added privacy and security and enhanced peace of mind.
Exterior aluminum shutters from Budget Blinds of North Glendale feature extra durability that also lets you score style points. Their aluminum construction offers great strength, and they’re an excellent choice for high-traffic areas and for homes with kids or pets. Outdoor shutters are also available in a host of colors and finishes.
Outdoor shutters are available in several styles that include hinged, fixed, multi-fold, and sliding panel.
The Best Materials for Window Shutters
We recommend two materials for window shutters. Each of these materials can be used for the above types when you order from Budget Blinds of North Glendale!
Wood Shutters
Nothing can beat wood shutters in terms of style. Wood shutters from Budget Blinds of North Glendale are made of North American hardwood, which is a straight-grained wood. This means they are more resistant to stains and hold paint better than other types of wood.
Wood shutters can also be customized to fit any unique window shape--from arched to round and octagon styles--and are a perfect window covering solution for French doors.
Wood also offers better and natural insulating properties to help lower your energy bills. However, it is the most expensive option we carry. They are available in three popular louver sizes, 2 ½”, 3 ½” and 4 ½” – which are all fashionably contoured to optimize your view.
However, wood shutters can be extremely finicky. Do not install them in humid rooms or rooms that commonly experience moisture, as they can warp. Wood is also notoriously hard to clean if you ever need to do more than dust it, so we recommend keeping them out of spill zones like kids’ rooms and kitchens.
They are perfect for your living room, den, master bedroom, and office.
Composite Shutters
If wood isn’t your style or in your budget, we then recommend composite. It’s more durable than wood and you won’t be able to tell the difference between the two options at first glance. You’re probably asking what the difference is, then. Well, composite is made out of vinyl, PVC, polysatin, or faux wood.
Composite shutters are extremely durable. These waterproof window coverings should never crack or warp, even after facing harsh weather conditions daily for an extended period of time. If you live in an especially humid environment, composite is the clear choice.
They’re also a breeze to clean and care for in general.
Composite shutters can go in any room in the house! We recommend them for higher traffic rooms, so everyone can enjoy their beauty.
We hope this guide helped you find the perfect shutter for your home!
