Protects Flooring

If your home has plenty of natural light and sunlight, area rugs help protect hardwood floors. Wood is very photosensitive – which means it reacts to sunlight. UV light is the most damaging when it comes to the wood changing color. Some woods such as Brazilian Cherry and Tigerwood, react quickly and become darker. Other woods such as Maple and Hickory, are slower to discolor and become lighter. Floor finishes like polyurethane can react with sunlight to turn floors orange/yellow.

Having an area rug and moving it around from time to time will help prevent discoloration.
