Recognizing the Signs That Your Blinds Need to be Replaced

As a homeowner, making updates to your abode is just part of the maintenance process.  You can expect to replace an asphalt shingle roof in 20-25 years, wood shingle roofs 20-30 years and metal roofs can last up to 50 years. Stepping inside, kitchens, bathrooms and hallways are generally repainted in 2-4 years while bedrooms may need to be painted again in 2-8 years.  Carpeting generally will last about a decade while wood or tile can still look good after 25-30 years.

But how long will real wood or faux wood blinds last in a home in Tinton Falls, Asbury Park or Deal? It depends on a few things but there is a rule of thumb that can help.  Good quality, custom fit blinds can serve you for at least 15 years while inexpensive blinds that you install yourself may last around 5 years.  The important question is, how do you know when your blinds are in desperate need of replacement?  We’ve got some tips to keep in mind to ensure that your blinds don’t become unsafe or an eyesore.

Check the color of your blinds. If you can see visible discoloration of your blinds, that is the first red flag. If the discoloration looks extreme, this is a sign that the structural integrity of the blinds is compromised. Exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays has done damage to these window solutions. Always consider window treatments that are rated high in UV protection so you can use them for a longer duration.

As you survey the blinds, are there any slats that look warped or bent? This is a direct result of humidity or heat in the room. Real wood blinds can be damaged by humidity, which is  found in bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms. Composite wood blinds can warp in high heat scenarios. And aluminum blinds, though very sturdy, can be bent by kids or pets. Eyeball your blinds and if you see any physical damage, you’ll probably need a replacement sooner than later.

Now, let’s check the functionality of your wood and faux wood blinds in Tinton Falls, Bradley Beach and Eatontown. Raise and lower the blinds. Do you find resistance or do they move smoothly?  If it takes more effort to maneuver them then it did when they were new, that is a sign of age and wear. The cords can become worn over time. Don’t ignore this situation as damaged blinds can cause injury to anyone operating them and eventually will stop working.

Do the blinds still tilt? If the slats aren’t closing as tightly as they once did, the tilt mechanism may be aging out and the blinds won’t block out light as they were once able to. As replacing just this portion of the blinds can be cumbersome and expensive, it makes the most sense to replace the set of blinds completely.
