7 Tips to Make Your Porch Merry and Bright this Holiday Season!

One thing remains the same, no matter what is going on in the world around us, the Holiday Season is about joy, and sharing it with family and friends! While our holiday gatherings may be smaller or look a little different this year, they can still be merry and bright! More than ever, this season is a time to share the joy and hope with our neighbors, delivery drivers, family, and friends or those just passing by our homes.

Here are 7 tips to make your front porch merry and bright!

Make Your Front Door Festive

2020 is the year to go all out on your front porch. Decorate your front door with a festive holiday wreath. Choose one with a joyful holiday message on it or add a standing sign beside the door that greets your visitors and celebrates the season. Add garland around your door frame and decorate it with shiny colorful ornaments and lights. Use outdoor ribbon to decorate your garland and wreath or add bows to wooden crates or metal boxes so they look like packages. Add festive plants depending on the weather in your area, those of you in warm climates can add Poinsettias as they are a tropical plant and like the sun. In a colder climate, add small spruce or other evergreen mini Christmas trees placed in galvanized buckets or wooden planters on either side of your door. Don’t have a green thumb? There are several outdoor artificial trees with lights that look good too. Just make your porch and entryway colorful and festive.

Make Your Porch Welcoming

Add a joyful holiday welcome mat. Even the delivery drivers need a little Christmas cheer!

If you are lucky enough to have room for a chair or bench on your porch add cozy pillows and blankets. If you are fortunate to have a large front porch, carry this welcoming theme throughout from the rocking chairs to the porch railing, add garlands, lights, and bright red bows. Or plaids and checks are always popular and bring a sense of nostalgia. Like more of a minimalist or Farmhouse Style? Use all white and green mixed with a touch of red berries. Use natural ribbon or black and white buffalo check for a Farmhouse Style. Whatever the color and pattern choices, the important thing is to make your porch welcoming and joyful.

Light It Up!

From wreaths and garlands to your rooftop and trees, add lights inside and outside your home. The warmth that light gives, and the joy reflected in a child’s eyes brings out the Christmas spirit in all of us! The great news is with battery-powered lights you can add lights to wreaths and garland and not have to worry about dangling cords and safety hazards. Consider placing your Christmas tree in a front window so all who pass by can enjoy the twinkling lights and beautiful decorations.

Use Natural Elements

Not into glitter and sparkle? Create a traditional Christmas décor with natural elements. Use berries, pinecones, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and greenery to create wreaths and garlands. The smell alone will make it feel like Christmas. Use burlap or another textural ribbon to dress up garlands and wreaths. Look for additional natural elements native to your area to add a festive local touch to your décor. Use whatever you can find from magnolia leaves to spruce and juniper or holly branches and other evergreens.

Let Your Windows Reflect the Season

This year place your Christmas tree or lit wreaths in your front windows. Share the sparkle of the season with your neighbors and passersby. Have the kids make Christmas messages to share. This year needs some joy so share it via your windows. Decorate trees with themed ornaments and decorations reflecting something you love. Whether it is ornaments you have collected from travel, or a collection of your favorite Disney characters, a tree that uses things that bring you happiness will fill you with joy and give others a glimpse into the things that are special to you! Plus, it is a great way to showcase a collection and to have something to add to each year. Another great idea is to start the tradition of allowing each child to have their own tree with ornaments that are special to them. This could be an annual tradition where a grandparent gives them a new ornament each year. The memories that go along with each ornament will remain special to them throughout their lifetime!

Light your Walkway

Add luminaries or lights leading up to your porch. This will help others find their way and brighten the path when evening falls. Set your lights on a timer so they come on at dusk and go off at an appointed time. A well-lit porch shows off your Christmas décor, welcomes guests, and helps delivery drivers find your porch for package drop-offs. It warmly says, “Welcome! We were expecting you!”

Share the joy!

Brighten someone’s day by placing a box of goodies on your front porch. Weather permitting, have bottles of water or snacks for delivery drivers and mail delivery personnel. Have your children make thank you cards or signs to addto the box. Make jars of hot cocoa mix or homemade jam or salsa and deliver to your neighbors’ porches. Send a poinsettia to an elderly neighbor to brighten their holidays. It is often the simplest gesture that makes the largest impact. In fact, why not help decorate a neighbor’s porch and make your whole neighborhood merry and bright this holiday season!
